To simplify my mental organization of food, I have learned to categorize food in my mind as dessert or nutrition. Cake or not cake. Cakes, cookies, ice cream are, of course, dessert. But, chips, crackers, prepared, processed food, white bread, fried food, soda, and so on are also desserts to me. I know that I can’t live a healthy life by living on these particular items. I know I will have a difficult time managing my weight. I know they are not nutritious. And, I know they will promote long term health issues.
On the other hand, whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, a small portion of nuts and seeds will promote good health. These are the foods I gravitate to in the grocery store while avoiding the other isles. I make sure I shop with a list so I can get in and get out without succumbing to the tempting cakes and cookies that have been purposely placed in my way, right inside the door, making me meander through the treats to get to the fruits and veggies.

Aside from the fresh fruits and vegetables I choose, I also choose minimally processed canned beans, dry beans, lentils, vegetable broth, whole grains, frozen veggies, soy products, etc.

Here are a few of my favorites. Vegetable broth for soups and gravy. The garbanzo beans are low sodium and used to make hummus or toss on salads. An emergency stash of frozen broccoli in case I run out of fresh. No sugar added applesauce satisfies a sweet craving. No additive soy milk which I use mainly for coffee. And, frozen hashbrowns – yes I eat a variety of potatoes, fresh and frozen. This brand is salt and additive-free. Check out more of my favorite staples in the photo gallery.
I love to batch cook soup. A good vegetable broth is essential for good flavor without saturating the soup with salt and artificial flavors. Plant Based Minestrone is one of my favorites. Garbanzos are also a pantry staple and nice to have on hand to make hummus when the mood strikes. Garbanzos are also fabulous thrown into salads. The Mango, Greens, and Beans salad is a tasty way to use garbanzos.
Enjoy your day!
